These ideas can be for processes or products that relate to improving the environment, alleviating poverty, saving or generating energy, improving nutrition, reducing hunger, helping the 3 billion world's poor, homeless families or children or other ideas that will improve the lives of humankind and take better care of our planet.
Examples include rocket stoves that burn less wood than open fires, ways of using recycled plastic bottles to make bricks, or the ZeerPot evaporative cooling system in use in Nigeria and Darfur, Africa.
- Ideas that improve healthcare [for any group of humans on the planet].
These ideas can be for processes or products that assist in the delivery of healthcare, the prevention or curing of disease, the education of humans regarding health practices or ways of living that reduce or mitigate the occurrence or spread of disease.
Examples include better ways to store medicine, easier ways to administer shots or new composting techniques.
- Ideas that use technology to create new processes or products that improve our lives.
These ideas can utilize any new or existing technology to create a new process or product that provides a more efficient or more effective way of solving a problem for companies or individuals or creates a new service or product that meets a need in the marketplace.
Examples include crutches that incorporate shock absorbers, the Linked In website for professional networking, the personal airfoil/rocket backpack, or devices that aid blind and visually impaired swimmers.
- Ideas that create new businesses in Northwest Ohio or anywhere else in the world and therefore jobs.
These ideas can be new processes or products or ideas that meet a need or fill a gap in this regional marketplace. Ideas of this nature presented in the ONU Idea pitch competitions include the Ada Sweet Tooth Bakery, The Findlay Taxi service, The Lima Melting Pot cooking school, The Ada Courtesy Bus Project, The Lucky Homes Project for homeless children in Hancock County, or the Backbeat Music Venue and Dance Club for 14-20 yr olds.
