Wind Power Development at ONU
In spring 2010, three 400-kW wind turbines were installed on the campus of Ohio Northern University.
These turbines are expected to meet 5-10 percent of the total campus electricity demands as well as
provide an educational resource for the university. This presentation will provide an overview of the
fundamentals of wind power, introduce relevant issues in wind farm development and discuss the
installation of wind turbines on the ONU campus.
Presenter:
Dr. David R. Sawyers Jr., P.E.
Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering
Dr. Sawyers, a faculty member at Ohio Northern University since 2003, teaches courses in thermodynamics,
fluid mechanics and energy systems. He was a research associate at the National Renewable Energy Lab in
Golden, Colo., during summer 2008 and advised the Senior Capstone group whose work helped initiate the
ONU wind farm.
