Biography:
Rachel Pinkney began playing the cello at the age of 13 and three years later won her first concerto competition affording her the opportunity to perform as a soloist with the New Mexico Symphony Orchestra in her hometown of Las Cruces, New Mexico. She received her Bachelor of Music from the Oberlin Conservatory of Music where she studied with Norman Fischer and her Master of Music from the University of Minnesota where she studied cello with Tanya Remenikova and chamber music with Margo Garrett.
Ms. Pinkney toured with the Minnesota Opera Company in Minneapolis, Minnesota before winning a regular position with The El Paso Symphony in Texas. She has maintained an active freelance career as a recitalist and chamber musician traveling throughout the US, Canada and Mexico. She has been a soloist with the El Paso Symphony, The New Mexico Symphony, The University of Minnesota Orchestra, and most recently with the Wayne State University Orchestra in Detroit, Michigan.
Ms. Pinkney has performed in master classes with Robert deMaine, Marcy Chanteaux, Timothy Eddings, Jorgen Jensen, Laurence Lesser and Mstilav Rostropovich, and was a participant in the 2008 Madison Summer Cello Institute hosted by famed Israeli cellist Uri Vardi. She also plays with an American folk band, Junior Hot Cell, whose recordings can be found on the Earth Orbit label.
Ms. Pinkney is currently a lecturer in music at Ohio Northern University where she has worked since 2002, and she is assistant principal cellist for the Lima Symphony. She plays regularly with the Toledo Symphony and the Windsor Symphony in Ontario, Canada.
Besides actively pursuing her musical career she recently returned to school to begin working on a Doctor of Pharmacy degree. She lives in Ada, Ohio with her husband and two children.
