ONU Hosts Polar Bear Invitational for Mock Trial
Friday, January 21, 2011
Ohio Northern played host to the third-annual Polar Bear Invitational Mock Trial Tournament. A total of 46 teams from 34 colleges and universities in 13 states participated in the tournament, with teams traveling from as far away as California, Florida and Mississippi to compete. The tournament consisted of four rounds, with 23 trials going on simultaneously in each round.
Each mock trial had a panel of two judges who evaluated students on knowledge of case material and on presentation and litigation techniques. Teams have to prepare both the defense and plaintiff sides of the case, as they are responsible for trying each side twice within a competition.
The top ten teams included:
1. Central Florida, Team 1025, Record 8-0
2. 2. Michigan, Team 1187, Record 7-1
3. 3. Eastern Michigan, Team 1009, Record 6-2*
4. 4. Loyola, Team 1274, Record 6-2*
5. 5. Ohio Northern University, Team 1014, Record 5.5-2.5*
6. 6. Michigan State, Team 1094, Record 5.5-2.5*
7. 7. Case Western, Team 1614, Record 5.5-2.5*
8. 8. Northwood, Team 1221, Record 5.5-2/5*
9. 9. Central Florida, Team 1026, Record 5-3*
10. Drexel, Team 1224, Record 5-3*

The Mock Trial Team came home from the University of Saint Francis Mock Trial Invitational with considerable success. Team 1014 placed 5th out of 18 teams at the invitational, as well as winning the Spirit of AMTA (American Mock Trial Association) Award. A truly nice trophy, which changes colors as you watch, can be seen in the Mock Trial Team's packed award case on the second floor of Hill Building.
In addition to team success, the 1014 Team also earned individual awards. Brendan Bryant once again won Outstanding Attorney (scoring a perfect 20!), and Franklin Howard also repeated as Outstanding Witness.
The ONU teams litigate into action next at home. The ONU Mock Trial Invitational will be held on January 15th and 16th, and some 42 teams from across the nation are scheduled to attend.
Mock Trial Gets On-Track
Thursday, December 2, 2010
The ONU Mock Trial teams turned in their best effort of the year so far, when Team 1014 finished 3rd and Team 1015 finished 5th at the Lewis University Mock Trial Tournament. Up until the Lewis tournament, held in Romeoville, Il, the ONU teams had little team success. Their fortunes turned in Illinois, however. In addition to the team's success, individual members Brendan Bryant, who was named an Outstanding Attorney, and Franklin Howard, who was named an Outstanding Witness continued to shine.
The Mock Trial team litigates into action again this Friday when they travel to Fort Wayne, IN for the Saint Francis University Tournament that begins Friday and ends Sunday.
