Scholarships & Resources
High school seniors who have been accepted to Ohio Northern University as English majors in the College of Arts & Sciences are invited to compete for Talent Awards beginning at $4,000, renewable annually as long as the student remains an English major and maintains a grade point average of 3.0 (B).
Following admission to the university, students must submit a portfolio of original writing by February 15. This collection should contain at least three, and no more than ten, writing samples (not to exceed thirty pages of written work) that will be judged by a panel of English professors. The English Department will then make recommendations to the Financial Aid Office; their staff will make all final decisions regarding this award.
Portfolio items may include essays and research papers written for English classes, articles written for the school or other newspapers, original creative writing (poetry, fiction, nonfiction, drama or screenplay) and blog selections. We encourage students to submit a variety of material. A note from a sponsoring English teacher must accompany the portfolio, attesting that the writing is the student’s own work.
Applicants should submit their typed material in an unadorned file folder or slim binder. The texts should be written in a standard typeface, without italics, except for artistic emphasis. Those submitting should not include any art objects or purely visual arts material, although hybrid text/visual entries are accepted, as well as short CD or video presentations.
The Talent Awards will be available to students regardless of what English Department track they intend to pursue: Literature, Professional Writing, Language Arts Education, or Creative Writing.
Send portfolios to: Talent Awards, c/o Dr. Lisa Robeson, Chair; Department of English, Ohio Northern University, 525 S. Main St. Ada, OH 45810 (419-772-2100). Materials will not be returned.
Sigma Tau Delta
Members of this national English honor society are committed to advancing literature and language. The ONU chapter, Delta Iota, actively organizes local literacy projects including reading to local elementary students. Additionally, Sigma Tau Delta creates a spirit of collegiality in the department through faculty-student activities. Each year, members are encouraged to submit their creative works and academic projects for presentation at the national conference.
Secondary Education Society
This group was formed by dedicated language arts education majors as a way for them to focus on the issues that affect their future as teachers. The chapter is recognized by the national Council of Teachers of English (NCTE), and members regularly attend the National NCTE conference of the College English Association of Ohio conference.
The English Department is a member of the Modern Language Association (MLA), the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE), and the College English Association of Ohio.
For several years, the English Department at ONU has maintained a dynamic relationship with the Northwest Ohio Screenwriters, an organization committed to supporting new and experienced screeenwriters throughout the region. In fact, our own Dr. Cullen is a founding member. NWOS holds monthly workshops (open to the public) in Heterick Memorial Library on campus at ONU. Click the image below to check out their website! You can also find them on Facebook!
ONU students have many opportunities to continue their education while traveling abroad and experiencing other cultures. In recent years, English majors have studied in South Korea and throughout Europe. For more information, contact Study Abroad at ONU.
In addition to study abroad opportunities, the English Department at ONU places a high value on professional development through travel to regional and national events and conferences. Further, we make every effort cover as much of student travel expenses as possible. Recent trips have included:
- AWP (Association of Writers & Writing Programs) Conferences in Boston, Chicago and Washington DC.
- Sigma Tau Delta (English Honor Society) Conferences in Portland and New Orleans.
- Winter Wheat: The Mid-American Review Festival of Writing in Bowling Green, OH.
- The Cleveland International Film Festival in Cleveland, OH.
