The Ohio Northern University Center for Teacher Education received full reaccreditation for its undergraduate teacher training programs for seven years through the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) in spring 2012.
In its report on ONU’s Center for Teacher Education, NCATE stated that ONU has no areas for improvement relative to any of the required standards. These standards are candidate knowledge, skills and professional dispositions, assessment system and unit evaluation, field experiences and clinical practice, diversity, faculty qualifications, performance and development, and unit government and resources.
Sandra Calvert, director of the Center of Teacher Education at ONU, said, “This national reaccreditation is affirmation of the high standards the education faculty has for ONU’s teacher preparation program and its students. We are honored to have our program recognized nationally with no areas for improvement. Schools and parents can be confident that our graduates have completed a program of excellence.”
Ohio Northern University will address accreditation again in 2019 under the standards currently being proposed by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP). CAEP promotes excellence in educator preparation through evidence-based accreditation that assures quality and supports continuous improvement to advance P-12 student learning. CAEP is the new sole accreditor for educator preparation for educator programs in the United States. To find out more about CAEP, visit caepnet.org/.
The Center for Teacher Education is currently accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education. The U.S. Department of Education recognizes NCATE as a specialized accrediting body for schools, colleges, and departments of education. NCATE is composed of more than 30 professional and policymaker organizations representing millions of Americans committed to quality teaching. It was founded in 1954 by the teaching profession and the states. NCATE continues its mission today: the profession and states working together for excellence in teacher preparation and development.
