Musical Theatre

Ohio Northern is one of the few universities in the state offering a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Musical Theatre. This program is a more focused course of study (in voice, acting, and dance) yet still grounded in a liberal arts education that prepares students to be working professionals. The program works similarly to the structured discipline of a professional theatre.
Casting is based on auditions/talent with class ranking not being a factor.
The program is enhanced by the integration of nationally recognized guest artists affording the student a variety of approaches to the work and an opportunity to begin to develop a network within the profession.
Senior students are encouraged to attend national auditions for professional theatrical work as well as graduate schools.
Please keep in mind that for an incoming freshman to declare a major in the BFA program in Musical Theatre, he or she must go through the auditions process.
Each year the graduating class in Musical Theatre presents a showcase for agents and casting directors. This senior showcase blends musical numbers, dance, and monologues into a cohesive whole.
Curriculum
Musical Theatre provides professional training in dance, music and theatre within a liberal arts environment. Students must audition for admittance into the major and are expected to successfully complete a sophomore hearing during their course of study. Graduates typically pursue professional careers in the performing arts. It is a policy of the Department of Communication and Theatre Arts that a student not be able to earn a BFA in Musical Theatre or Theatre Design and Production while concurrently earning a BM in Performance or Music Education.
