The Department of Art & Design: Ohio Northern offers both the Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Fine Arts degrees with majors in advertising design, art education, graphic design and studio arts with concentrations in two-dimensional, three-dimensional and pre-art therapy. The department holds memberships in national organizations such as the National Art Education Association, College Art Association, Foundations in Art: Theory and Education, AIGA: The Professional Association for Design, and the National Council on Education of Ceramic Arts. The department is recognized in the fourth edition of “Creative Colleges: A Guide for Student Actors, Artists, Dancers, Musicians and Writers” as one of the best creative programs nationwide.
The Elzay Gallery of Art is named for Colonel William O. Elzay. Elzay attended Ada High School and graduated from Ohio Northern in 1925 with a bachelor of arts. He earned an MBA from Harvard in 1929. In 1965, ONU awarded him an honorary Doctor of Business Administration. He also served on the Board of Trustees from 1955 until 1985. Col. Elzay died May 26, 1995.
Gallery Director: Melissa Eddings Mancuso is an associate professor in art at Ohio Northern. She received her MFA in painting from Edinboro University of Pennsylvania and her BFA from Ohio University in 1992. She has taught at ONU since 1997, served as chair from 2000–2002, and currently teaches painting, printmaking and foundation courses in the department of art & design.
Contributor: Laura Barnhardt Corle (BFA ’77) is currently an adjunct instructor in art at Ohio Northern. She is also a free-lance artist in the Findlay area, and teaches eight-week watercolor classes in her studio. Laura exhibits locally, regionally, and nationally. Her work has been accepted in countless art exhibits including the Toledo Area Artists annual juried show at the Toledo Museum of Art.
The Exhibit’s Identity
This exhibition is unique in the fact that this is the first time the ONU Department of Art & Design has been fortunate enough to organize a benefit sale for the student juried show. The identity concept embodies Professor DeVore’s artistic style and demonstrates his idea of a limited color palette.
Designer: Kaitlin Bondra is a senior graphic design major with a minor in public relations from Mentor, OH. She currently serves as vice president of ONU’s student chapter of Kappa Pi, is an active member of AIGA and PRSSA. She has completed internships at Gulfstream Communications in Charleston, SC
and at Ideastream in Cleveland, and spent a semester studying
in Florence, Italy.
Designer: Brittany Lang is a senior graphic design major from Newark, OH. She actively participates in AIGA, Kappa Pi, Lion’s Club and runs cross country and track for ONU. She has had internships at American Wind Flights Academy, American Trim, and Battelle Memorial Institute.
Faculty Adviser: Brit Rowe Prof. Brit Rowe is associate professor is graphic design at Ohio Northern. He joined the faculty in 1999 after receiving his MFA degree in graphic design from the University of Michigan. He is a member of AIGA/The Professional Association for Design, the University and College Designers Association, Kappa Pi, Theta Chi, Order of Omega and Omicron Delta Kappa. He served as department chair from 2002–2013.
