Ohio Northern University acquired an extensive collection of more than 700 original antique maps from the estate of Colonel Welty and his wife in 1982. The maps remained in storage until 2005 when Dr. Ken Baker released them to members of the Department of History, Political Science, and Criminal Justice for conservation, instruction, and display. The maps now reside in Heterick Memorial Library. You will find below a very small selection of the maps in the collection, which date from the late fifteenth to the mid-nineteenth century. A few of the maps are reproductions, but the vast preponderance are original. They include multiple maps of the world as well as regional maps of the Americas, Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Asia, and Oceania. Some are historical maps, such as the "modern" maps of ancient Israel that Colonel Welty collected. We are still processing the collection for public use. Most of the maps have been encapsulated in pH neutral plastic. Some must still require restoration. We are currently constructing a website that will make the maps available on the internet. Watch this page for developments. The entire collection should be up and running within the year. For now, please enjoy the preview that you see on this page.
